Overview
The OTHM Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DET) is a professional teaching qualification designed for those working, or aspiring to work, as teachers and trainers in further education, adult learning, or workplace training in England.
This in-service qualification requires learners to complete 100 hours of teaching practice, with a minimum of eight observed sessions (totalling eight hours). It develops learners’ ability to plan, deliver, and assess effective lessons while exploring theories of education, communication strategies, equality and diversity, and professional practice.
The qualification is equivalent to the Certificate of Education (CertEd) and provides eligibility for Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status through the Society for Education and Training (SET).
Entry Requirements
To enrol, learners must:
- Hold a relevant vocational or academic qualification at least one level higher than their learners (minimum Level 3 in their subject area).
- Have access to 100 teaching practice hours where they are responsible for planning, delivering, and assessing lessons.
- Be 19 years or older at the start of the course.
Module Structure
Learners must achieve a minimum of 120 credits: 75 from mandatory units (Group A) and at least 45 from optional units (Group B).
